Capabilities

Engineering

In order to achieve our capabilities in Engineering our qualified Engineers work with two affiliate resources, AutoCAD Inventor and GibbsCAM 3D Modules. This technology allows our Engineers to directly communicate with our CNC manufacturing equipment using customer supplied drawings and models, while sticking to the appropriate technical requirements. Additionally, it also allows them to assist customers in the design process, allowing them to achieve their desired product. This software possess many benefits as it minimizes job set up times, improves part quality and consistency, reduces manufacturing cycle times and lowers our scrap rate. These benefits allow us to provide competitive prices, quality service and faster lead times to our customers.

Quality

Our quality policy is:

We at Bristol Machine Works Limited believe in providing our customers with advanced machining and fabrication services by applying continuous improvements through an integrated quality system.

We have been ISO 9001 certified since 1999 and follow the processes that place the customer at the core and continuous improvement in the fore. Three management review meetings and internal audits occur yearly, while third-party annual audits are performed through our ISO certification body SAI Global. We act on recommendations from both internal and external audits, including those of our customers. Vendor audits are also performed to ensure Bristol receives the best possible products/material. Bristol Machine Works is certified by the Canadian Welding Bureau to CSA Standard W47.1 at all three sites. The welders are also qualified under American Welding Standard AWS D1.1. The valve rebuilding procedure is certified under the Association of American Railroads (AAR) and Transport Canada, authorizing activities to be performed as a tank car facility pursuant to the requirements of Standard CAN/CGSB-43.147-2005, as amended in July 2008, incorporated by reference in the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations.

Bristol Machine is one of the only machine shops in Northern Ontario to have a state of the art Zeiss Accura 10 CMM. This allows us to inspect and measure all products helping us to consistently meet customers’ requirements. The machine features include:

  • Accuracy to 3.5 microns
  • Climate controlled
  • Calypso software
  • Full surfacing capability
  • Size Range- 63” X 94.5” X 55.1”

We also utilize quality control hand tools such as calipers, micrometers, indicators, height gage, surface roughness tester and gauges.

Manufacturing

Some of the major processes undertaken at Bristol include:

BORING MILLS, LARGE MILLING

• We have 5 boring machines with X 160-Y 100, 40,000lbs max table capacity
• Have deep drilling capabilities
• Typical products are machine frames, furnace coolers, buckets truck boxes

Toshiba HBM BP150-R22, Machining Eject Bucket
Doosan 700 XLY, Large Shaft

LARGE TURNING

Bristol Machine has 3 state of the art CNC turning centers.
These machines have a range of capabilities and features

• 1.5 meter diameter x 5 meters long
• 4 axis with milling
• 1 CNC Vertical Turning Center, 3.5 meter diameter x 2 meter high

PRODUCTION TURNING

Bristol has 3 manufacturing cells consisting of 9 machines. Some of the key products that we work on with these machines are pins, bushings, inserts and hydraulic cylinder component

Nakamura WT300, Hardened Steel Bushing
Dah Lih 1450, Hydraulic Cylinder Components

PRODUCTION Milling

• 3 Horizontal Machining Centers, multi pallet system
• 3 Vertical Machining Centers
• Horizontal mills have full 4th axis capabilities. All have pallet changers with
modular pallets for quick-change fixtures.
• Machines have touch part probes, allowing us to quickly ensure alignment of
fixtures and parts.

Welding Shop

Bristol Machine is certified by the CWB at all three of our locations.
Some of the major welding processes that we perform are:

• Submerged Arc Welding (SAW)
• Flux-cored Arc Welding (FCAW)
• Gas Metal Arc Welding (MGAW)
• Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
• Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) also known as Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG)

Some other key features of our welding capabilities are:

• Weld Positioners to 40,000 lbs.
• Cranes that carry 20 metric tons
• Stems & Barrels Welding Machines
